Mumbai, July 6: After Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016, Karan Johar is back to doing what he loves the best — directing films. So, on the 36th birthday of Ranveer Singh, KJo announced his new film, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. He has roped in his favourite Alia Bhatt and Ranveer in the lead roles. They will share the screen with Bollywood veterans Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi.
Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt in KJo’s next
Karan Johar decided to return to feature film direction after five years with a ‘love story that is deeply embedded in the roots of family’. Taking to Twitter, KJo announced Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, along with a motion poster. “Thrilled to get behind the lens with my favourite people in front of it! Presenting Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, headlined by none other than Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt and written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan & Sumit Roy,” he wrote. He also mentioned that the film will be out in 2022.
Dharmendra, Jaya & Shabana together
On Tuesday morning, KJo had announced the two leads of the film. Later in the day, he took to his social media to announce his “all time favourite actors and the extraordinary family of Rocky and Rani.” The film brings together the stellar casting of Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi together. This is the first time they are working in a Karan Johar film.
Ranveer and Alia introduced the veteran actors, who play pivotal roles in Rocky and Rani’s love story – their “family” comprising “legendary” Dharmendra, “evergreen” Jaya Bachchan and “inspirational” Shabana Azmi. “Legendary, evergreen and inspirational! Meet the rest of the pillars of this kahaani – Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi!,” wrote Alia.
“Honoured to share the screen with these legends of Hindi cinema- Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi!” tweeted Ranveer.
“Meet the legendary stars of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. We are all thrilled to work with these veteran legends and I cannot wait to be on set with them!,” wrote KJo.
Not a “regular love story”
KJo also shared a short promo video on Instagram to announce his new project. Ranveer also shared the video. Sharing the video on Instagram, Ranveer wrote, “A special announcement on my special day! Presenting – Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani along with my dazzling supernova Alia Bhatt, directed by the genre himself, kaleidoscopic visionary Karan Johar.”
The film brings back the hit Gully Boy pair of Alia and Ranveer together on the big screen again. KJo also wrote that it is a love story but it’s not “your regular love story.”
Karan Johar wrote: “Yes, it’s a love story, but no – it’s not your regular love story. Rocky and Rani are going to redefine your usual love stories to take you on a journey!”
Making love stories
In a video shared on his Instagram account on Monday, the Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham director said that in the last few years, his focus has been on making the Dharma brand grow, but now, he wishes to ‘go back to (his) favourite place’ – on a film set.
“The last five years for me have been about making Dharma Productions, Dharmatic Entertainment, Dharma Cornerstone Agency (DCA), Dharma 2.0 grow and push the cinematic boundaries through the lens of new and talented filmmakers. But personally, my primary passion always lies behind the camera. Telling stories, creating a world filled with a multitude of colours, eternal music, emotions,” Karan said.
“And I feel it’s time to go back to my favourite place, on set, and to create what I adore the most – love stories. I am extremely excited to announce my next film tomorrow – a love story that is deeply embedded in the roots of family. I hope to seek all your wishes and blessings as I begin this journey,” he added.
In the caption of his Instagram post, Karan called his return to direction “the beginning of a new journey and (his) way back home – all at once”.
Takht can wait
After Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, KJo has directed two short films in the Netflix anthologies — Lust Stories and Ghost Stories. He announced his next directorial venture, Takht, in 2018. However, it kept getting delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Takht, which is an ambitious period film, will star Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. During an Instagram live last month, KJo said that he will begin work on the film after he wraps up Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.
